The filter light stays on after changing the filter

What is actually happening

On almost every consumer purifier that indicator is a countdown, not a measurement. It counts running hours and lights up when it reaches the number the manufacturer chose. It does not look at the filter, it cannot tell whether one is fitted at all, and fitting a new one changes nothing by itself. Somebody has to tell it to start counting again.

That is why the reset is a deliberate gesture — a button held for several seconds, sometimes a combination — rather than something the machine does when the panel closes. It is designed to be hard to trigger by accident, which is also why it is easy to miss.

The practical consequence: an indicator that is still lit after a change is the normal state, not a fault. A fault is what you have left once the reset genuinely fails.

Check these, in this order

The ones that cost nothing come first. Do not buy anything until you have been through them.

  1. Confirm the unit is fully closed and the panel seated.

Many units will not accept a reset, and some will not run at all, while a door switch reads open. If the unit also refuses to start, this is almost always it.

  2. Hold the reset control for the full time the manual states, with the unit powered on.

A brief press is the single most common reason a reset does not take. The hold is usually several seconds and the unit normally acknowledges it — a beep, a flash, the light going out. No acknowledgement means it did not register.

  3. Check which control is the reset on your specific model.

It is not always a dedicated button. On some units it is the filter button, on others a combination held together. Our filter guide for each model publishes the documented sequence for that unit.

  4. Unplug for a minute, plug back in, and reset again.

If the reset then works, the controller had latched. If the light returns within hours rather than months, the timer is not being stored — that is a genuine fault and a warranty matter.

When the answer is the filter

Rarely. This symptom is about the counter, not the filter. The one case where the filter is involved is when the unit did not accept the new one properly — a protective wrapper left on, or a filter seated the wrong way round — and the door is not fully closing as a result.

Questions people ask about this

Do I have to reset the filter light?

Yes, on almost every model. It is a running-hours counter and nothing resets it except the documented gesture. Skipping it means the next warning arrives early and stops meaning anything.

Is the filter light a sensor?

No. It counts hours of use. It does not measure how loaded the filter is and cannot detect whether a filter is present. That also means it can be wrong in both directions: a filter in a dusty home may need changing before the light, and one in clean air may not.

What if the light comes back a few days later?

That is not normal. A reset that holds for days and then reverts suggests the counter is not being written to memory, which is a hardware fault rather than something you can fix from the panel.
